PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- A bill that would allow undocumented immigrants to get special driver's licenses is headed for a vote in the Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday, the final day of the General Assembly session.
The bill, S-768 sub A, would allow the state to issue the special licenses for some undocumented immigrants who cannot obtain driver's licenses because they don't have Social Security numbers.
Under the proposed law, eligible applicants could obtain a special driver's license if, among other things, they provide proof of residency and a federal Taxpayer Identification Number.
The special driver's license would look different from the standard driver's license and, the bill states, could not be used as a form of state identification.
After one of the senators expressed concern about not having time to review the amended version of the bill, introduced Monday by Sens. Frank Ciccone and Juan Pichardo ,both Providence Democrats, the committee agreed to postpone a vote until Tuesday.
