WARWICK, R.I. -- A Cranston man charged with robbing a bank was ordered held without bail pending a probation violation hearing Monday, court officials said.

Nicholas Chateauneuf, 31, of 40 Nickerson St. was on probation on a 2011conviction for drug possession.

The police charge Chateauneuf entered the Washington Trust Bank at 2174 Plainfield Pike (Route 14) in Cranston around 3:15 Wednesday afternoon.

He wore a Red Sox cap, sunglasses and a black jacket, the police said, and appeared to be talking on a cell phone. The police said he approached the teller and passed her a note instructing her to give him money: no stalling, no dye packs, and no alarm. Chateauneuf stuffed the undisclosed amount of cash into a Walmart bag and fled toward Plainfield Pike, the police said.

A customer, who was not identified, chased him and tackled him on a nearby lot, the police said. Others, including bank employees, soon joined, helping restrain Chateauneuf until the police arrived.

Bail was set Friday on the felony charge of second-degree robbery at an initial appearance in District Court, Warwick.
