PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- U.S. Rep. David N. Cicilline announced Tuesday that he is appointing Peter Karafotas as chief of staff in his Congressional office in Washington.
Karafotas, who will replace Scott Fay, most recently was co-chief of staff and legislative director for former U.S. Rep. Dale Kildee, D-Mich.
Fay has been Cicilline's chief of staff since the Democrat took office in 2011 and also worked for the late Sen. Edward M. Kennedy.
"I am excited to welcome Peter as the newest member of my team, and I look forward to working with him to ensure that my office continues to provide the most effective services possible for Rhode Island families," Cicilline said in a statement. "Peter brings a wealth of knowledge and firsthand managerial experience with him, and I am excited to welcome such a talented and experienced individual to my team."
In addition to his work for Kildee, Karafotas served from 2007 through 2009 as deputy chief of staff and communications director to U.S. Rep. Jan Schakowsky, D-Ill.
