NORTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. - An employee of a subcontractor working at a construction site at Electric boat at Quonset Point died after being injured on the job Monday.
In a statement, Electric Boat's parent company, General Dynamics, said that the employee was working for a general contractor that is in the process of constructing a new manufacturing building for the Quonset facility.
Philip Aldrich, deputy chief with the North Kingstown Fire Department, said the department received an emergency call from a cell phone just before 11 a.m. and responded to a call of a non-responsive man who had possibly been electrocuted at the Electric Boat construction site.
When firefighters arrived, the employee was being given cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) by Electric Boat's company fire brigade, Aldrich said.
He said that the fire department from the nearby Quonset Airport also responded and that the man was transported to Kent Hospital by a rescue from East Greenwich.
The company said that the employee was fatally injured at about 11 a.m.
"We are extremely saddened by this event," said Sean Davies, Electric Boat's general manager at Quonset Point. "Our thoughts are with his family."
Company officials were not releasing the employee's identification late Monday afternoon, citing respect for the family.
They said that the company has begun investigating the incident and that Electric Boat is cooperating with local, state and federal agencies.
