PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- A federal grand jury in Providence on Wednesday returned an indictment charging Matteo Morelli, 34, of Warwick, a U.S. Postal Service letter carrier, with one count of delay or destruction of mail by a Postal Service employee.
Morelli is alleged to have discarded more than 1,000 pieces of mail addressed to people and business in East Greenwich and North Kingstown. People on routes assigned to Morelli in both towns complained that they were not receiving items intended for them. After an interview with Morelli, an affidavit said, more than 1,000 pieces of mail were found inside a dumpster behind a school in Warwick.
The indictment was announced by U.S. Attorney Peter F. Neronha and Rafael Medina, special agent in charge of the Northeast area field office of the U.S. Postal Service's inspector's office.
Morelli's arraignment is set for July 23.
