PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- ISO New England, the grid operator for New England power companies, has renewed its request for homes and businesses to reduce electrical demand in the face of the heat wave.

The organization said that Wednesday proved to be the 10th highest demand day on record for New England, drawing 26,655 megawatts at its peak. (One megawatt provides electricity to 1,000 houses.)

The peak power demand forecast for Thursday was 27,900 megawatts, and ISO New England said the Friday forecast is the same.

The total available capacity is 29,275 megawatts, but the organization said if demand rises above that level it can import electricity from other areas.
