PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Rhode Island's Water Resources Board is promoting a "Slow the Flow" campaign to reduce the amount of drinking water that residents use on lawns.
The board, part of the R.I. Department of Administration, said the average lawn needs no more than an inch a week to stay healthy. Saving clean water is as simple as using a rain gauge and not watering if enough rain has fallen.

A second campaign, "Save Water This Summer" is targeted at people using water from the Chipuxet Basin, mostly in South Kingstown. The basin provides public drinking water to South Kingstown and Narragansett, and its wells and streams also support agriculture and private residences in South Kingstown, Exeter, and small areas of North Kingstown, Richmond and Charlestown.
Residents are advised to call their local water supplier or the water resources board at (401) 222-7901 to ask questions and learn ways to reduce water use.
