Today in RI history: TB wipes out zoo animals

A year ago today:
Jessie Crum, 30, of Warwick, suffers fatal injuries when her car strikes a tree in Bellingham. Her passenger, Joshua Champagne, 31, of Burrillville, was admitted to Rhode Island Hospital in serious condition.

5 years ago today:
At least 45 species - more than 3,000 butterflies - were spotted this summer during the Audubon Society of Rhode Island's 5th annual butterfly count. Hope Foley, an Audubon spokeswoman, said the 3,179 butterflies tallied exceed last year's total of 2,898.

25 years ago today:
The tuberculosis outbreak at the Roger Williams Park Zoo, which led to the death of every mammal on display in the South American exhibit last spring, was caused by a form of TB that seldom affects humans.
