Editor's note: Journal Staff Writer Philip Marcelo will be traveling to Liberia in August to report on that country's progress 10 years after the end of a devastating civil war. Today he begins Rebuilding Liberia: The R.I. Connection, a series of reports on the project.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- I've been awarded a fellowship from the International Center for Journalists, in Washington, D.C. to report from Africa for The Providence Journal this summer.
I'm one of 14 journalists taking part in the center's "Bringing Home the World: International Reporting Fellowship Program for Minority Journalists," which is funded by the Ford Foundation, Scripps Howard, Samuel I. Newhouse and the Brooks and Joan Fortune Family foundations.
The goal of this trip is to produce a series for the newspaper in September.
In the coming days, I'll be posting short items on interviews and events I've covered these last few months as I've worked to refine this project, as well as stories, videos and other things related to Liberia.
I also hope to post here at least daily during my travels and in the days and weeks after I
return. So check back often!
