PORTSMOUTH, R.I. (AP) - The owner of the ferry service that connects Prudence Island to the mainland says he won't end the service in December, as he had previously announced in the spring.

The Newport Daily News reports that Bruce Medley told Prudence Island residents during a meeting on Saturday that he would continue the service until a new one can be put in place.

The ferry makes daily runs between Bristol and Prudence Island, which is a part of Portsmouth and sits in the middle of Narragansett Bay.

The town has received four proposals from other companies that wish to run the service.

Medley says he won't end the service until a viable alternative with quality boats and crew can be established.
