WESTERLY, R.I. (AP) -- Westerly's "Runaway Bunny" statue has been restored to its original condition after being vandalized over the weekend.
The Westerly Sun reports that the statue in Wilcox Park has been cleaned and has a new coat of wax put on by the North Stonington, Conn., artist who created the work.
The vandals used hard-to-remove paint to write vulgar words and the letters "KKK" on the statue of the popular children's book character, which sits in the park outside the Westerly Library.
After failing to get the graffiti off with brass polish, workers contacted artist Joan Binney Ross, who suggested several environmentally safe cleaners.
Ross and workers were able to remove the graffiti for about $20 Tuesday, using a biodegradable soap-and-water combination.
No arrests have been made in the vandalism.
