PORTSMOUTH, R.I. -- Interim Police Chief Jeffrey Furtado had a message for Portsmouth citizens concerned about Wednesday's abduction of a 13-year-old Portsmouth girl who was later found and recovered in New Jersey.

"They should know this is not a random act or a child snatching. The victim and the suspect were known to each other" through the internet.

Law enforcement officials Thursday named Daniel Berger, 27, of Haskell, N.J. as the suspect charged with luring Kathryn Botelho from her condominium in the morning. Authorities would not say where she is now, other than with her family.

Berger was arrested in his home town and was brought to U.S. District Court in New Jersey, members of the Portsmouth police, FBI and state police said in a joint press conference here. No date has been set for him to be brought back to Rhode Island for arraignment.
