NEWPORT, R.I. -- A sold-out crowd of 10,000 poured into Fort Adams State Park for the Newport Folk Festival Saturday, a day blessed with flawless sunny weather.
Scores of boats, kayaks and rafts bobbed in the waters off the park, and there were long lines to get into the beer gardens.
There was music on four stages. Early in the day, Langhorne Slim went from the sweet "Song for Sid," written for his grandfather to the rock 'n' roll racket that ended his set.
On the Quad Stage inside the fort, The Lone Bellow had the crowd singing along with a cover of John Prine's "Angel from Montgomery."
"It's amazing," said festival founder George Wein. "We've got thousands and thousands of young people focusing on what we're doing."
The festival continues Sunday. Tickets are sold out.
