TIVERTON, R.I. (AP) -- Twenty Rhode Islanders have been recommended for treatment for rabies exposure following the unexplained death of a calf housed near an ice cream stand in Tiverton.
The state health department said Monday that 243 people have been assessed for rabies exposure, including 69 out-of-state residents.
The 3-month-old black-and-white calf named Oreo died last week, but local animal officials did not notify the state in time for the remains to be tested for rabies. The calf had been quarantined after biting a Massachusetts resident on July 15.
Anyone in contact with the animal since July 5 is urged to notify the health department.
Officials say a second calf that died last week did not have rabies.
The calves had been in a pasture next to Gray's, a popular ice cream shop.
