PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Cumberland Mayor Daniel McKee said Tuesday that he is preparing to run for lieutenant governor next year and expects to make a formal announcement this fall.
McKee, who filed a "notice of organization" last week with the Secretary of State's Office that indicates he plans to run for lieutenant governor, said he has been working to build a base of supporters and raise money to support his campaign.
"We're headed in that direction," the Democratic mayor said.
McKee, in his sixth term as mayor, faces a likely opponent in Secretary of State A. Ralph Mollis. Mollis, also a Democrat, said Monday that he is planning to run for lieutenant governor and expects to make a formal announcement this fall.
