Edward J. Liston, 82, of Brunswick, Maine and Vero Beach, Fla., the retired president of the Community College of Rhode Island, died Tuesday in Brunswick.
Liston was the school's second president. He spent 22 years there until his retirement in 2000. CCRI's Providence campus has been named the Edward J. Liston campus in his honor.
Liston was elected twice to the board of the American Association of Community Colleges and of the National Junior college Athletics Association. He was a member of the Board of the Community College of the Air Force.
Upon his retirement from CCRI, Rhode Island College presented him with an honorary doctor of public service degree.
Liston was named "Irish-American Man of the Year in Rhode Island in 2000.
The funeral will be Saturday. The Brackett Funeral Home, Brunswick, is in charge of arrangements. The family suggested that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Edward J. Liston Scholarship Fund, c/o Community College of Rhode Island, 1762 Louisquisset Pike, Lincoln, R.I. 02865-4585.
