PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- An initial award of $625,000 in disaster recovery funds for housing has been approved for Washington and Newport counties, Governor Chafee announced in a news release Thursday.
The money is the first installment of $3.2 million that will be coming to Rhode Island from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's Hurricane Sandy Community Development Block Grant Disaster Recovery funds.
"Although Rhode Island was not in the direct path of Hurricane Sandy, it did cause damage in our state," Governor Chafee said in the news release. "Many of our southern, coastal communities suffered significantly, specifically homes, businesses, and public facilities. This is another way to help Rhode Islanders recover from Sandy."
At least half of the money must be used for projects in low- and moderate-income communities. Most of it will go to repair public facilities and infrastructure.
