NEWPORT, R.I. -- About 145 civilian employees of Naval Station Newport received letters last week from the station's commanding officer, saying that a reduction-in-force "may soon be necessary" due to budget reductions.
The letter urged employees to keep their personnel records up to date.
"It should be noted that this letter does not constitute a reduction in force notice," Captain Douglas Mikatarian wrote in capital letters.
Naval Station Newport is a sort of military landlord to about 50 "tenant commands" which include the Naval War College and Naval Undersea Warfare Center. There is a total of about 4,200 civilian employees within the Naval Station Newport commands.
Lisa M. Woodbury Rama, a civilian spokesperson for the Naval Station, said employees of the other commands have not received Mikatarian's letter.
