PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- A city police officer was dragged about 30 feet by a car on Hope Street Friday afternoon while trying to enforce a street closure.

Detective James Clift, on a detail at a construction site at the intersection of Hope and Glendale Avenue, saw a car drive around the orange traffic cones marking the road closure.

Clift approached the vehicle, which had four young men in it, and tried to talk to the driver, the police report said. But the car accelerated, striking Clift and dragging him down the pavement.

Clift was treated at Miriam Hospital for abrasions. The police said they have at least two witnesses, one of whom told them that he had a video of the vehicle.
