PORTSMOUTH, R.I. -- A fire in a duplex at the end of Duffy Terrace sent one occupant to the hospital and went to a second alarm.
Deputy Fire Chief Michael O'Brien said the department received multiple 911 calls just before 3 p.m. The fire, which resulted in nearly a complete loss of one unit and moderate damage to the other, appears to have been accidental rather than malicious in cause, he said. Firefighters from Bristol, Tiverton, Middletown and the Navy responded to help Portsmouth firefighters.
The person who was taken to Charleton Memorial Hospital had been trying to rescue a rottweiler and may have suffered smoke inhalation that triggered cardiac symptoms, O'Brien said.
The dog got out, but a cat died in the fire, O'Brien said.
