LONG ISLAND, N.Y. -- A boater who had been reported missing Thursday by his family was located early Friday morning about 70 miles off Long Island, the Coast Guard said.
Stephen Crane, 61, who had left Maine on his way to Florida aboard the 31-foot Southern Cross sailboat Austina was spotted at 7:08 a.m. by a helicopter crew on a Coast Guard scheduled "first-light search."
The early morning search included crews from Coast Guard air stations in Cape Cod and Elizabeth City.
Crane, the Coast Guard said, was not in distress just making a slower pace than he had planned.
Crane, who is traveling alone, left Portland, Maine, on Aug. 1, stopped in Gloucester, Mass. and was rounding Cape Cod Sunday, when he last reported his position.
His sister contacted the Coast Guard in Jacksonville, Fla., around 1 Thursday afternoon when he failed to arrive in Cape Hatteras, N.C., Thursday as originally planned.
