CUMBERLAND, R.I. (AP) -- State police are investigating a fire district headquarters in Cumberland on a report that thousands of dollars may be missing from the department.
The Woonsocket Call reports that state police executed a search warrant Monday at the Cumberland Fire District's headquarters. The district is one of four independent fire departments in town.
Investigators left the building with four boxes of paperwork.
The chairman of the Cumberland Fire District's board of commissioners, James Leonard, says commissioners weren't aware of any problems with the district's finances before Monday. He says investigators said as much as $20,000 could be missing.
State police declined to release details of the probe.
Leonard says commissioners are stunned by the allegations.
