PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- A 14-year-old Cranston boy was shot in the shoulder when someone opened fire as his family drove through Providence Sunday evening.
The family had left a party in the neighborhood and were heading to a bowling alley when they turned onto Waldo Street and saw a low spray of sparks and heard booms. They thought it was fireworks -- until the teen yelped in pain. A bullet had shot through the trunk of the family car and through the back seat, hitting the boy's shoulder and just missing his 5-year-old sister, said Deputy Police Chief Thomas F. Oates III.
Sokphorn Khoy drove her son, Bejan, directly to Hasbro Children's Hospital, where he was treated for a minor injury and released Monday. Police recovered the bullet from inside the car.
Several shell casings were found on the pavement at Waldo and Sorrento streets, according to a police report. Police searched the area for two suspicious people, but no one was arrested.
