Twenty public-school districts have now announced they'll close at least on Monday in preparation for Hurricane Sandy, with some already announcing Tuesday closures as well.
The list has grown quickly since Coventry first announced, around noon on Sunday, that it would close Monday and Tuesday.
Those closing include the northwestern communities of Burrillville and Foster-Glocester, the central Rhode Island cities of Cranston, Providence and Warwick and coastal towns such as Jamestown, Narragansett and Westerly.
But the online closings list maintained by the Rhode Island Broadcasters Association stretches far beyond public schools.
The list includes at least 20 private schools, some Catholic schools, vocational-tech schools, preschools and child-care centers, some senior centers, the North Providence Municipal Court, various health centers, some religious institutions' confirmation classes and at least 10 businesses, including the Warwick Mall.
The closure list is updated by individual districts and other organizations through a self-serve system and has been adding closures steadily all Sunday afternoon. If you've checked it once and want to check for changes, be sure to hit the "refresh" button in your Internet browser.
Coventry and Providence public schools have announced that their "12-month employees" must report to work.
