Lightning that struck two of National Grid's main transmission lines early Sunday morning spawned power failures that a company representative said reached a peak of 10,000.
By about 3:30 p.m., that had fallen to under 3,000 National Grid customers, said Christine Milligan, a National Grid spokeswoman. She said one area that remained particularly affected was North Kingstown.
She said the company hoped to restore all customers by 11 p.m.
"People are going to be restored as soon as we can get to them," said Milligan.
But Milligan added: "However, I understand more storm systems are coming through, so hopefully we won't get hit further. Obviously, if there is more wind or lightning that could be a setback."
