PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- Rhode Island Hospital has appointed an internal medicine physician from New York's Beth Israel Medical Center as its new chief medical officer.

The Lifespan health system announced the appointment of Dr. Latha Sivaprasad on Tuesday. It took effect Sunday.

Sivaprasad will oversee graduate medical education and the medical staff affairs and be responsible for improving the quality of health care delivery at the hospital. She will also help provide direction on issues related to medical staff growth, development of the clinical program and overall academic medical center priorities.

Sivaprasad has been Beth Israel's associate chief medical officer and chief patient experience officer. She was previously medical director of quality and patient safety.

Sivaprasad succeeds Dr. John Murphy. He is now executive vice president for physician affairs for Lifespan.
