PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- Providence public schools will be closed for the remainder of the week for the Rosh Hashana holiday.

The district says classes will not be held on Thursday and Friday because of the Jewish New Year.

Students who don't attend Providence public schools but who are bused to other public, private and parochial schools by the city system will still get normal busing service on both days. Officials said the students had earlier been told they would not get regular service.

Rosh Hashana began at sundown Wednesday.

Normal classes will resume on Monday.
