PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- The wife of Rhode Island Governor Lincoln Chafee tells The Associated Press she is proud of his decision not to run for a second term.
The Democratic governor made the surprise announcement on Wednesday.
Stephanie Chafee says the decision took courage. She says she and her husband felt it was the right moment for him to say he loves his job and wants to spend the next 16 months making Rhode Island the best it can be, rather than spending it in a primary.
The governor was joined by only a handful of staff and no family members during Wednesday's announcement. Stephanie Chafee tells the AP she supports him 100 percent, and that they both typically do their own thing. She says it never came up that she join him.
