PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- After considering a run for mayor of Providence, Central Falls Deputy School Supt. Victor F. Capellan on Sunday dropped out of the race.
"Six months ago I launched an exploratory committee knowing that, together, we could make a difference and improve the lives of children and families in the capital city," Capellan said in an email to The Journal.
But, he said, "After much thought and serious consideration, I have decided that I will not be seeking the office of mayor of Providence."
Other potential candidates for the post include Providence City Councilwoman Sabina Matos, Providence City Council President Michael Solomon and Judge Jorge O. Elorza, who stepped down from the city Housing Court last week to seek the office.
In making his decision, Capellan said he balanced the needs of both Providence and Central Falls.
Central Falls "has made a remarkable transformation, but much work remains," he said.
"I remain fully committed to my work as an education advocate. And I remain fully committed to do whatever I can to make Providence a great city and to ensure success for whoever is in the office of mayor for the next four years."
