PAWTUCKET, R.I. -- A 30-year-old man was shot in the chest as he returned home on Cooper Street late Wednesday night.
Diego Rodriguez was taken to Rhode Island Hospital, where Pawtucket police said Thursday afternoon that he was in stable condition with injuries believed to be non-life threatening.
The police are searching for the lone gunman, who appeared to have targeted the victim and may have been waiting for him, said Maj. Arthur Martins. The shooting did not appear to be a robbery attempt, Martins said.
Martins said that Rodriguez had just moved to the area a few weeks ago from a neighboring city and was staying with a friend.
Rodriguez was briefly conscious when police arrived and told officers that as he turned around, the gunman was there, Martins said. The gunman fired one shot.
The last shooting in Pawtucket was the fatal slaying of 26-year-old Robert Littlejohn, whose body was found in a thicket off Blackstone Avenue on July 29.
The suspect's description was vague. Police ask anyone with information about the shooting to contact Detective Donti Rosciti, (401) 727-9100 ext. 737.
