SMITHFIELD, R.I. -- A 20-year-old Brockton man was arrested just after noon Thursday and charged with felony assault, eluding police and being a fugitive from justice, Smithfield police said Friday in a news release.
Jerry Anitus of 56 Rainbow Circle in Brockton, Mass., was arrested after his gray Toyota Corolla struck a Smithfield Police cruiser and two vehicles operated by the R.I. Fugitive Task Force, who were pursuing him in connection with several armed robbery charges.
Smithfield's involvement started with a radio transmission that North Providence detectives and the fugitive task force were pursuing a vehicle, which Smithfield observed on Putnam Pike near Esmond Street.
The vehicle got on Route 295 north, where it struck the Smithfield cruiser. It exited onto Douglas Pike, where it struck the two task force vehicles before coming to rest just south of the exit.
Anitus was scheduled to appear in District Court, Warwick.
