CRANSTON, R.I. -- Rhode Island's unemployment rate rose from 8.9 percent in July to 9.1 percent in August, according to figures released Thursday by the state Department of Labor and Training.

At the same time, the state gained 2,000 Rhode Island-based jobs between July and August.

The number of unemployed Rhode Island residents, classified as people out of jobs and actively seeking work, rose from 49,200 in July to 50,100 in August.

The U.S. unemployment rate is 7.3 percent in August, down slightly from 7.4 percent in July.

The Massachusetts unemployment rate for August remained steady at 7.2 percent. Massachusetts figures released Thursday said the state added 7,500 jobs in August, up from a revised loss of 300 jobs in July.
