NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) -- Major repairs to the Cliff Walk damaged by Superstorm Sandy are on hold as details of the lowest bid are being analyzed.
The Newport Daily News reports that Newport's Cliff Walk Commission says the John Rocchio Corp. of Smithfield submitted a bid for more than $3 million, while the bids of all the other companies were more than $5 million.
Commission member Peter Janaros said the lowest bid also is much lower than the $6 million state estimate. He called it "a disconnect."
Commission Chairman Robert B. said it's hard to see how anyone can do the work at such a low price.
A message was left for the John Rocchio Corp. on Tuesday morning.
Some walkways along the Cliff Walk were washed away or caved in and huge boulders were moved by the violent surf.
