KINGSTON, R.I. -- Power at the University of Rhode Island was still out at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, and a volunteer organization has issued a call for fire monitors at the 19 residential facilities on the main campus.
Volunteers on fire watch detail are expected to walk the building hourly to inspect the fire alarm system and update a log. They will respond to emergencies and notify the fire department and building occupants as necessary.
Eight-hour shifts, starting at 4 p.m. Wednesday and going on all night and day, will need to be covered until the power is restored. Volunteers can register on a Serve Rhode Island webpage.
