NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) -- Sailing officials from six continents are in Newport this week to plan for the Volvo Ocean Race.
The Rhode Island city is the only North American port that will host a stopover in the around-the-world race, which begins in October 2014 in Alicante, Spain. Newport's stopover is scheduled for May 2015.
Governor Chafee and others will discuss plans for the race on Tuesday in Newport. Officials from all 10 stopovers are in Newport to discuss the management of the race.
Other stops in the Volvo Ocean Race include South Africa, New Zealand, Brazil, France, and China.
