SOUTH KINGSTOWN -- A 26-year-old Providence man was killed after a car he was riding in struck a light pole on Rte. 1 northbound opposite the South County Commons early Saturday morning, police said.
John P. Balzano had been thrown from the four-door car and was unresponsive when rescue personnel responded at 12:52 a.m., according to a news release. Balzano was pronounced dead at South County Hospital.
The driver, whom police are not identifying at this time, was taken to South County Hospital.
The accident remains under investigation by the police accident reconstruction team and detectives. Further information was unavailable Saturday.
