PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Firefighters late Monday were battling a blaze in a 2-1/2-story tenement at 67 Bergen St.
Firefighters were ordered to evacuate the structure shortly after arriving around 8:50 p.m. for fear that it might collapse.
Reinforcements were summoned to deal with heavy flames, but the fire was brought under control around 10 p.m.
Bergen Street lies off Chalkstone Avenue in a densely populated neighborhood.
Despite the numerous fire trucks, the fire drew few spectators from nearby houses, perhaps due to the chilly temperature.
No injuries were reported. It could no be determined immediately whether anyone had been at home when the fire broke out.
