Today in RI history: Students finally make the grade on national test

A year ago today:
For the first time, Rhode Island's students have scored at or above the national average on the tough test known as the Nation's Report Card.

5 years ago today:
A ramshackle building on Water Street in East Greenwich that local historians say is one of the last relics of the 19th-century village the locals called "Scalloptown" has been saved from the wrecking ball so it can be reincarnated elsewhere as subsidized housing.

25 years ago today:
State trooper John Leyden III shoots out the tires of a car whose driver allegedly tried to run him over after a high-speed chase down Route 95. The driver was charged with assault with a dangerous weapon.
