PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- A Coast Guard helicopter, along with divers from Warwick and rescue boats from Providence and other communities, searched the Providence River and Upper Narragansett Bay Friday for a man who reportedly jumped from the eastbound side of the Iway Bridge a little after noon.
Lt. Bryan Swinter, of the Coast Guard sector at Woods Hole, said a passing motorist reported seeing a "middle-aged" man on the bridge's railing who then disappeared. A vehicle was found parked close by.
Swinter said the rescue boats, some equipped with sonars, probed the water for several hours before calling off the search at sunset. The state police and the Providence Fire Department planned to resume the search Saturday morning.
