SMITHFIELD, R.I. -- Television and movie actress Brooke Shields is the latest celebrity to sign on as the face of Foster Grant sunglasses.
Shields joins a string of Hollywood celebrities dating back to the mid-1960s as a model for Foster Grant sunglasses, which are produced by FGX International Inc. in Smithfield. The sunglasses were the product at the center of an iconic ad campaign -- "Who's behind those Foster Grants?" -- which ran from 1965 until 1984.
Among the celebrities who appeared in the ads were Peter Sellers, Woody Allen, Vanessa Redgrave, Jason Robards, Raquel Welch, Anthony Quinn, Elke Sommer and pro football player Herschel Walker. The ads were reintroduced in 1999, with former supermodel Cindy Crawford donning the company's shades.
