SCITUATE, R.I. -- The office manager and bookkeeper for a Johnston physician was arrested Friday at his home in North Providence and charged with embezzlement and forgery, Rhode Island State Police officials said in a news release.
Stephen R. Marano, 42, of North Providence, was released from District Court, Warwick, on his promise to pay $10,000 if he fails to appear. His felony screening is set for Jan. 24.
The investigation started when a Johnston physician told the Financial Crimes Unit that Marano had taken $650,430 by forging the doctor's signature to open an unauthorized bank account.
Marano is thought to have diverted insurance payments to the account, issued checks to himself and made cash withdrawals since 2006, the state police said.
