PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The head of the state Board of Elections ruled on Tuesday that there will be eight polling places in Central Falls for next month's mayoral race, despite a plea from the local Board of Canvassers that only two are needed.

Robert Kando, the state board's executive director, said that state law requires every city and town to have all polling places open for a general election. Central Falls had eight polls open for the Nov. 6 and those same eight will be open on Dec. 11.

James A.Diossa, the leading vote-getter in the mayoral primary, sent letters to Kando and John F. McJennett III, the state-appointed receiver, asking them to keep eight polls open next month.

The city Board of Canvassers wanted to two, to save money.
