PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Individuals in Newport and Washington counties can apply for disaster assistance now that President Obama has approved Rhode Island's amended request, Governor Chafee announced Wednesday in a news release.
His initial disaster declaration was approved, and an amendment adding Kent County for public assistance was approved, but the amendment adding individual assistance for Newport and Washington counties, made before the Kent amendment, wasn't approved until Wednesday.
This makes the two hardest-hit counties eligible for individual assistance, disaster unemployment assistance, disaster legal service and crisis counseling, as well as Small Business Administration disaster loans.
