NEWPORT, R.I. -- Designated bike lanes and "share-the-road" markings are being installed on Memorial Boulevard this week as part of a new program that aims to prioritize road work in areas with "high levels of congestion and crashes," the state Department of Transportation said.
The work, part of a $345,000 contract with Pawtucket's Arden Engineering Constructors that identified 13 areas on Aquidneck Island of high priority, will also change Coddington Highway from a four-lane road to two lanes with a center turning lane from Girard Avenue at the Community College of Rhode Island's Newport County Campus to West Main Road in Middletown.
