CRANSTON, R.I. -- Someone opened fire on a multi-family house a few blocks from the police station early Friday morning -- just missing small children sleeping inside.

The bullets shattered the windows into a first-floor bedroom and parlor at 159 Franklin Ave. where a young couple live with their two children, neighbors said.

"They're very good people. They don't bother anybody," said David Poirier, 55.

This is the second shooting in the neighborhood since July, when two men shooting across Webster Avenue struck a car and several buildings. No one has been arrested in that incident.

The gunfire woke up Jecenia Polanco, 23, who lives on the second floor with her boyfriend, Jose Morales, and their toddler. They'd recently moved from Providence.

"I thought this would be a safe place," she said. "I wouldn't expect a shooting here in Cranston."
