PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Wayne Powers told jurors he asked his superiors in October 2007 for the OK to run an advertisement offering $2,000 to terminally-ill people and their caretakers in the Rhode Island Catholic newspaper.
"It did not strike me as something the Catholic newspaper would want to entertain," Powers, an ad representative for the newspaper, told jurors Friday. "It just did not seem correct to me."
"Terminal Illness? $2,000 in CASH, Immediately Available," it read.
Powers wrote Father Bernard Healey a note asking about the advertisement from Cranston lawyer Joseph Caramadre. "I think he is a philanthropist," the note said.
Healey, who Powers believed knew Caramadre, approved the ad the same day. It would run two weeks at a total cost of $560, Powers said.
