CENTRAL FALLS, R.I. -- Two significant players in California politics have made campaign contributions to James A. Diossa, the Latino candidate for Central Falls mayor, who is the front-runner in next month's election.
Antonio Cardenas, a three-term city councilman in Los Angeles, sent $750 to the Diossa campaign, while John Ek, a lobbyist and partner of a public relations firm in San Pedro, Calif., contributed $1,000.
Cardenas was elected to Congress from District 29 in California on Nov. 6.
Bill Fischer, spokesman for Diossa, said that the candidate struck up a friendship with Cardenas at a conference for elected Latino officials three years ago. At the time, Diossa had just been elected to the Central Falls City Council.
Diossa will face-off against ex-Police Chief Joseph P. Moran III in the Dec. 11 mayor's race.
