Warwick native Martha McSally, a former Air Force combat pilot, has lost the closely contested race for Arizona's 2nd Congressional District, according to the Arizona Republic newspaper.
McSally was defeated by Ron Barber, who currently holds the seat. Barber was an aide to former U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and was wounded along with her in an assassination attempt in January 2011. In June, Barber was elected to Giffords' seat in a special election held after Giffords stepped down.
Barber was challenged by McSally in the general election.
"The race for the 2nd Congressional District had been too close to call for 10 days, but on Friday an Arizona Republic analysis determined that McSally would not be able to muster enough votes from the remaining uncounted ballots to surpass the thin lead Barber had held in recent days," the report said.
