Today in RI history: Horses break out in Middletown

A year ago today:
Providence teachers approve a three-year contract that guarantees that every fired teacher will be returned to the district in exchange for substantial concessions. The agreement calls for $53 million in spending cuts over three years, which goes a long way toward closing an estimated $110-million budget shortfall.

5 years ago today:
Cranston will repay as much as $1.7 million to the Providence Water Supply Board after years of illegally taxing a sprawling network of reservoirs, aqueducts, pump stations and pipe lines in Cranston, city officials say.

25 years ago today:
Police round up horses that were running down East Main Road in Middletown after escaping from stables in Portsmouth. One of the nine horses died of an apparent heart attack.
