According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski had surgery Monday morning to repair a broken forearm suffered in the Patriots' 59-24 victory over Indianapolis on Sunday.

Initial reports suggested that the tight end could be out four to six weeks, which would mean Gronkowski would probably miss the rest of the regular season.

However, a league source told ESPN that Gronkowski will miss "probably a few weeks."

The injury happened on the extra point of New England's final touchdown during a 59-24 dismantling of the Colts. Gronkowski caught all seven balls sent his way against the Colts, racking up 127 yards and two touchdowns. He was not available for postgame comment, which is a bit unusual.

The injury is obviously a significant blow, especially in the context of Aaron Hernandez's lingering ankle troubles. Hernandez has missed the last three games and has played in only four contests this season.

The Patriots do have some depth at the position, with Visanthe Shiancoe now active. Daniel Fells was a healthy scratch Sunday, and Michael Hoomanawanui has also seen action at tight end this season.

Rookie defensive end Chandler Jones suffered an ankle injury in the first quarter and did not return. Jermaine Cunningham saw the majority of snaps in Jones' absence.
